How do reusable hand warmers work?

Unlike disposable hand warmers, these hand warmers are reusable. These are small plastic pouches with a clear liquid and a small metal disk inside. To release heat, flex the metal disc. Hey, presto! The liquid will turn into crystals which give off heat. The heat lasts about 45 minutes, or longer if you have it in your pocket. To reset the hand warmer, boil it in water for about 10 minutes, until the crystals turn into liquid again. You can boil several at a time.

How does the hand warmer work? The liquid in the bag is composed of water and sodium acetate. When you flex the small disk, it releases tiny pieces of metal. These stir up the amazing chemical sodium acetate, causing a chain reaction. The sodium acetate becomes crystals which release stored thermal energy. It will heat up to 54°C! You can reverse the process by boiling the pouch until the liquid is clear again.

Where can you use hand warmers?

These reusable hand warmers are perfect for protecting yourself from the cold during the winter. Numb hands are not to be taken lightly! Keep one in each pocket in your jacket. Cold hands can also make arthritis pain worse, so keeping your hands warm will help. Many use hand warmers when doing outdoor activities. Of course, you'll need to be able to put your hands in your pocket at least part of the time. So the ski might not be suitable for their use! But they can be very useful when you're hiking, bird watching, or working outdoors. If you're on the go and your shoes get wet, you can also use a few spare hand warmers to dry your shoes faster.
